Popularly known as Behenji, she was indisposed for long time battling cancer. She was operated upon in February and had recovered but her condition deteriorated in past few days. She passed away at her Sopore residence.
Born in 1940, she passed her matriculation in 1956 and joined education department as teacher and rose to level of Joint Director and retired as Director J&K Libraries. She contributed hugely to the education set up and was considered to be a tough administrator.
In 1970s, Atiqa Bano had established a welfare organisation called Majlis-e-Nisa which worked for welfare of downtrodden women of Sopore and elsewhere. After Majlis-e-Nisa, she set up Meeras Mahal in which she displayed old Kashmiri objects collected from every nook and corner of Kashmir. She once said about Meeras Mahal: "I have collected door to door items right from needles, tooth picks and every little or big objects of our use from some 200 years back. It is a history of the common person, not of royalty."
May her soul rest in peace!
