"The BJP (Bhartiya Janata Party) claims to be Ram bhaktas (devotees of Ram), and want to build a Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. But are they really Ram bhaktas or Ram bairees ?" asked Markandey Katju, in a Facebook post on January 16, 2019.
In the Facebook post Justice Katju argues that "in the Sanskrit Ramayan of Valmiki (the original Ramayan) the virtues of Prince Ram are set out in great detail, ( see Ramayan 11.2.28-47 and 5.35.9-14 ), where it is said ( 2.2.39 ) that 'Ram behaved like a father to the people, that he sympathised with the people in their sorrows, and was pleased like a father when the people celebrated festivals".

He concludes that "Ram looked after the welfare of all his people, not just a section of them". "Ram never got anyone lynched or persecuted on account of his religion, or committed atrocities on minorities, or gave hate speeches against them, as has been happening ever since the BJP came to power in May 2014" he adds further.
